Which Coach Is Right for You?
At PXbJ, we deliberately don’t ask “Hip-Hop or Contemporary?”. Both movement disciplines carry their own cultural roots and histories — living traditions, not interchangeable options to weigh against each other. And one doesn’t rule out the other anyway: many of our dancers train in both over time. The real question is a different one: which coach speaks to you?
Why coach comes before style
Dance lives on a coach’s spirit and experience. That’s why it’s worth sampling a few different classes and noticing which coach you connect with, rather than committing to a direction upfront. And if you’ve ever felt that Hip-Hop or Contemporary “just isn’t for you” — often it wasn’t the style, it was that you hadn’t found the right coach for it yet. So instead of “I don’t like Hip-Hop,” try “let me try a different coach.”
Hip-Hop at PXbJ
Feeling the beat, connecting movement with attitude, performing together as a group — this covers House, Vogue, Oldschool and Newschool, among others.
Contemporary at PXbJ
Flowing, expressive movement and fine-tuned storytelling — this covers Modern Dance, elements of Ballet and Flow Work, among others.
And on heels?
PXbJ specialises in Heels — it's our signature format and at the core of what makes us who we are. That doesn't mean every single class happens on heels: depending on coach, style and choreography, a session sometimes runs without high heels. If in doubt, just ask beforehand what a given class is about.
And if both appeal to me?
That's exactly what our Try-Out Sunday is for: once a month, through our Urban Sports Club partnership, you can drop in and get a feel for which coach and which direction feel right for you.
